Training

The branch trains to British Sub-Aqua Club ("BSAC") standards. BSAC has been training people to dive since the early 50s, and Islington Divers has been training for divers for over 30 years.

Whether you are new to diving, want to advance your skills, or you are joining BSAC from another diving agency (e.g. PADI), Islington Divers can find a safe programme that meets your needs.

BSAC regularly updates and improves its diver training programme and keeps pace with developments in equipment and diving knowledge.

From basic training in a swimming pool, students will soon complete their first open water dives to achieve Ocean Diver certification.

The next stage is BSAC's Sports Diver and beyond, where divers improve water skills and develop techniques and experience.

Please see below for course Club and Sports Diver course details and details on additional qualifications. Training is available with Islington Divers for all these levels.

The Ocean Diver training course prepares you for this in a swimming pool or sheltered water and then we will introduce you to open water in a controlled and safe manner. This also gives you the opportunity to practice safety skills with a qualified instructor or experienced diver.

    Sports Diver

This level builds a sound foundation of open water diving skills and experience through a series of structured practical lessons. Once you have gained this open water experience with a qualified instructor, you are ready to take part in dives with other Sports Divers or those of higher grades.

    Other qualifications include:

    Dive Leader

Dive Leader training concentrates on the responsibilities and safety aspects of leading other divers on an open water dive. Practical lessons in rescue management and rescue skills will give you the confidence and ability to deal with those unforeseen emergencies. Leading a dive will develop your enjoy confidence and experience as a diver.

    Advanced Diver

This course further develops your knowledge and skills. You will gain experience in planning and organising dives at different sites and under different circumstances. Additional experience will be gained in using small boats, chartwork, navigation and many other important skills. The BSAC consider this grade as equivalent to a fully trained diver.
